FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQS)

What version of browser do I need to use the site?

The site is designed to work with Internet Explorer 5.5 or above. If you have an older version we advise you to upgrade

Why can’t I get past the log in box?

Please make sure you are entering the correct username and password for this site. This will probably be different to your login for the standard Business Link site, and was set up by you when you registered. if you have forgotten your login details, see below.

Are you sure your Company is already registered? If not, you won't have a login yet.

If you continue to have problems or are taken back to the homepage or login box each time you try to login or register, there may be a technical issue. For further information please contact Business Link on 01844 210430.

I've forgotten my username and/or password

On the homepage there is a link entitled 'If you have forgotten your password click here'. Click on this link and input your email address and your login details will be automatically sent to you. If the system does not match your email address to an existing record then another window will open requesting further information and after checking your details we will send you the username and password.

Why do I get an alert message/ nothing happens when I try to register or select the guide, terms and conditions or contact us buttons?

This application has been built using standard web development features and functions such as HTML, cookies, session variables, javascript and pop-up windows. None of these features are used to make any permanent record of your personal details or about your computer, they are just used to ensure that the registration process works correctly. For the system to function properly on your computer system, you should have the ability to run all of these features. Some personal firewall products, popup blockers and settings in your web browser may be configured to disable some or all of these functions. You may need to change these settings in order to be able to register. If you have difficulty in doing this, please contact Business Link on 01844 210430.

I can’t update my details.

If you are taken to a page with an error message each time you click on the update button, then there is probably an issue with your internet security settings (see above). The error message should give you some further information about this. If you still need assistance please contact Business Link on 01844 210430 or send the error message to info@businesslinksolutions.co.uk.

Why can I only select three skills?

In order to make sure that we can find suppliers for our customers with the appropriate expertise, we ask you to list the three where you have most expertise and that you particularly want to put forward to the small business customers Business Link deals with. In this way we hope to ensure that customers are put in touch with suppliers best equipped to help them with their specific issues. You can use the Company Description field to tell us about the full range of skills and expertise that you possess and services that you offer.

I can’t find a skill which suits my business.

Have you used the search function in the skills area to track down what you need? If that doesn’t work it may help to look at the complete list, which is displayed at the end of the Guide. Are your skills appropriate for a business to business service? If you are still unable to find a suitable one please contact us.

Why can’t I type any more in the box?

Some boxes like the Company Description are limited to a certain number of characters, which is indicated in the text on the left hand side.

Why do I need to supply referees?

The reason we ask for referees is to give potential customers additional information on suppliers and a route to ask another customer about their experience with a supplier, as part of their own selection process. In reality, we don’t know how often people will follow them up, but at least they have the choice to do so if they wish.

I can’t supply any referees

If you have only recently started in business and don’t yet have any client referees then you will not be able to complete the registration at this point. However, your details will be saved on the system, and you can add the referees at a later date (as soon as you have them) to complete your record.
If you are concerned about confidentiality, then there is an option NOT to release the details to a potential customer, when you get to the Supplier Summary screen.

The questions don’t apply to my business.

Some of the questions asked, like project size and duration, day rate etc, do not apply to all businesses. They are used as part of the matching criteria (where appropriate) and are not passed on to customers, so we suggest that you select whatever is likely to be closest to what a typical customer would ask for. For example, if you work on commission basis rather than a day rate then you should select the day rate 'Up to £250' and explain in the Company description that you work on a commission basis.

What information is sent to customers?

The information that we send to the customer is in the form of a profile, an example of which is available here and in the guide. You can also see what information is sent to the customer by clicking on the "View Details" button from your record.

I am registered with the National Business Link Consultants Register- why do I need to be on this system?

We also make use of the National Register but would prefer to hold details of all potential suppliers in one place, so with your agreement we would like to hold your details in the Supplier Matching Service as well. As there is no charge to you for this, we hope that you will find this beneficial.

My record is complete but I have been contacted to say that it isn’t.

There may be some missing data within a particular page (for example contact details for referees) or data which is not exactly what we need. If you are not sure please contact us.

Is there a charge for being on the Supplier Matching Service?

There is no charge to be registered on this database or to use the service, via your local Business Link, if you need suppliers yourself.

I can’t download the guide

The Guide and the profile example are pdf files that require Acrobat Reader to open. If you don't have Acrobat Reader already installed on your PC you should be able to download a free version via the Internet at www.adobe.com.
